The Trains are a Comin’
For train enthusiasts and time and environmental conscious travelers in Europe, exciting news is on the way courtesy of Lonely Planet’s Tom Hall.
On December 13th, Amsterdam is moving just a bit closer as it opens a high-speed southern line connecting Paris to Amsterdam in three hours and Brussels in just under two hours. Plus, with the addition, a ride to London from Amsterdam only takes four hours and ten minutes with a change in Brussels.

As you travel further down the continent, more lines are being added as Italy’s Red Arrow service is connecting Rome with Milan in two hours and forty-five minutes over 389 miles. Almost 150 miles an hour through the Italian countryside.
While the comfort of train travel is a great excuse to hop on board, the environmental benefit is significant as well. As noted by The Observer and Seat61, a train produces about 90% less CO2 than an equivalent flight. If you’re trying from London to Paris for example, you’re talking about a different between 244 kg/CO2 versus 22 kg/CO2…and you are only saving 45 minutes of travel time. Calculate in security times and comfort issues and train wins.
So Euro travelers, check out that train and breath easy, more lines are on the way.
